I first laid eyes on Mt Everest in 1989 and it was a life-changing experience for me. All that I had previously thought was important vanished, and was replaced by the knowledge that this life we’re leading happens only once: make it count.
Since that day in '89, all that I've done (see "A Short History") has made me ready for this ascent. My body and mind have been "getting in shape" to withstand the rigours of the climb. I have followed my dreams and they have now taken me back to the mountain that I will attempt to scale.
We will work with an individual no matter what their disability and will accept able-bodied persons should they just want to be part of a Mount Everest expedition. My wish is that I can make this experience possible for any person. All they would need would be an adventurous spirit and the desire. The trails are perfect for outdoor wheelchairs or can be traversed with modern equipment manpowered by willing enthusiasts.
The first wheelchair trip I organized was up and over the saddle of Mt Kilimanjaro so I know trips like this are possible. I will not mislead you, though: this trip will be tough. With the extreme climate, long days, inclement weather, emotional challenges and plain hard work, the unpredictable cannot be planned for. With this in mind, please search your soul and decide if you are up to the task. Your reward will be beyond any expectations you may have of pride, personal power, serenity, and joy.
We have special wheelchairs (trailriders) available to navigate the terrain. Modifications may be necessary and mandatory before such a large scale expedition is begun. My team of fire-fighters, North Shore Rescue members as well as Canadian and Nepalese guides make the travels as comfortable as possible. That said, it's no "walk in the park." However, the walk in to base camp is where the magic begins. From the friendly, kind and accommodating people of Nepal, to the inconceivably located monasteries and temples, to the breathtaking views that one can expect in the Himalayas, the trip adheres to the saying: "Life is not measured in the breaths you take but in the moments that take your breath away."
We plan on fund raising so we can purchase the trailriders and leave them in Nepal. Thus, if the dates of our expeditions are not suitable, the chairs will be there for your future adventure. We will do whatever is possible to accommodate you whether it is just the hike to base camp or you wish to stay as the team attempts the summit of the highest mountain in the world. We are also planning trips to Africa, Asia, South America as well as Canada.
Please feel free to contact me directly. We will plan individual trips as time and money are always a concern. Any questions are welcomed and I will do whatever I can to help you realize your dreams... as I have mine.
Hope you choose to join us.
